My dear friends Alex and Joe ordered from Menna's late last night. Alex had an unbroken chicken sandwich streak and even at 1am he remained dedicated to his craft, his passion. No one believed in him. No one thought he could do it, but he had eaten nothing but chicken sandwiches for nearly 24 hours and he fearlessly marched on in the face of adversity and naysayers. Like a soldier or firefighter or dog show handler he was destined to become the kind of hero relegated to the margins of history - but he would be damned if he didn't try. He was giving it his all, with an all-time record on the line. He chose Menna's because he believed that they would be in his corner, that they would support him and his dream. He ordered online, certain that they had his back. An hour passed and his smile began to fade. His resolve weakened. I have never seen Alex give up on anything and I hope I never do. But Menna's gave up on him. We called them after an hour to make sure they were okay. They hadn't been acting strange or anything but you could tell something was going on. Maybe stress, maybe big city living in Kalamazoo was just too fast-paced for them. Whatever it was must've really rattled them. When we placed the order online it was like they didn't even recognize it. Maybe they wanted to make the order but just couldn't bring themselves to do it. I've heard that when lions are wounded they conceal it, pretend everything is fine so the other lions don't see. Maybe Menna's was hurting inside and didn't want to look vulnerable. After a long pause, they said they hadn't even seen our order. We said it was okay, they could just go ahead and cancel it. Alex was heartbroken, not quite himself, but if Menna's needed space he was willing to put his own goals on hold. Menna's called us back at nearly 3am. We thought about not answering but seeing as they were obviously in a dark place we picked up... "I'm outside, I brought your food..." they said. But it was too little too late. It hurt not to let them in. We agonized over leaving them out there, alone, cold. But this was best for everyone. I hope Menna's finds what they are looking for, but if they can't support us and our dreams then it was never going to work out. In summary, if you like very old food or no food at all that this is the place for you. But us? We've gotta keep moving forward.
